KING CHARLES III, b.1948
Arms as Prince of Wales

King Charles III is the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and succeeded to the throne of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms on his mother's death in 2022. His arms are now those of the United Kingdom, which have been in their present form since the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837

As Prince of Wales, his arms we more elaborate than those of other members of the royal family because they included additional badges and arms relating to his titles. The arms are differenced by a white label of three points, as is traditional for the eldest son of the Sovereign, but since 1911 the arms of the Prince of Wales have also included an inescutcheon bearing the arms of the Principality of Wales ensigned with his coronet. Outside the shield, the arms of the duchy of Cornwall and badges of the Heir Apparent (three feathers) and Wales (the Red Dragon - Yr Ddraig Goch) are also displayed.

Princes of Wales are automatically Knights of the Order of the Garter, so Prince Charles has been able to encircle his shield with the Garter since being given the title in 1959.

In Scotland, the prince was known by the traditional Scottish title for the heir apparent - Duke of Rothesay - and uses an entirely different coat of arms.
