Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, is the fourth child and third son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He was granted arms in 1983, consisting of the royal arms of the United Kingdom differenced by a white label of three points, the center point charged with a Tudor rose. Unsually, when he married Prince Edward was given and earldom rather than a dukedom, but it was announced that the intention was that he would be created Duke of Edinburgh when that title became vacant (i.e. after both Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip have died). In 2019 he was given a second earldom for use in Scotland. The Earl of Wessex was admitted to the Order of the Garter in 2006 and encircles his shield with the Garter. Before that, his senior-most order was as a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order. |
