PRINCE RICHARD, DUKE OF GLOUCESTER, b.1944

Prince Richard of Gloucester, is the younger son of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, and a grandson of King George V. As the younger son, Prince Richard had not expected to inherit the dukedom and had pursued a private career as an architect, but he became heir and started undertaking royal duties after the death of his elder brother, William, in 1972.

As a grandchild of a sovereign, the Duke bears the royal arms differenced by a label of five points, alternately red lions and St.George's Crosses. His coronet contains alternate crosses patée and strawberry leaves.

Prince Richard became a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order in 1974, and a Knight of the Garter in 1997, so his arms are now encircled with the Garter.
