Sir Alfred Moritz Mond, PC, FRS, DL (1868-1930) was an industrialist, financier and politician who served as Liberal MP for Swansea from 1910 to 1918 and for Swansea West from 1918 until he lost his seat in the 1923 General Election. He had previously been MP for Chester (1906-10) and went on to become MP for Carmarthen from 1924 until he was elevated to the House of Lords as Baron Melchett in 1928.
While in the House of Commons, Mond served in David Lloyd George's governments as First Commissioner of Works from 1916 to 1921 and Minister of Health 1921-22. After political disagreements with Lloyd George he change parties from Liberal to Conservative in 1926.
Mond was born in Widnes, Lancashire, to German Jewish immigrants Ludwig Mond, a chemist and industrialist, and Frieda née Löwenthal. He was created a baronet in 1910 and appointed to the Privy Council in 1913. He was also a prominent Zionist, served as President of the British Zionist Federation, and contributed to Zionist causes. He founded the town of Tel Mond in what is now Israel.
The coat of arms shown here are those of Sir Alfred as Baron Melchett. Prior to being given his peerage in 1928 his arms had no coronet or supporters and he would have used the helm of a knight or baronet.
