Rowan Williams was born in Swansea and attended Dynevor School. He became Bishop of Monmouth in 1992 and Archbishop of Wales in 2000, before leaving both offices to become Archbishop of Canterbury in 2002.
Dr Williams retired as Archbishop in December 2012 and was created a life peer - as Baron Williams of Oystermouth - the following month.
