Hugh Gore, Bishop of Waterford and Lismore in Ireland, began his clerical career in Oxwich and returned to Swansea at the end of his life. In 1683 he founded Swansea Grammar School, now a comprehensive school and named Bishop Gore School after him.
Bishop Gore was reputedly related to the Gores, Earls of Arran (Ireland) and used the Gore arms.
