Thomas Dering, Esq, was the third son of Sir Edward Dering, 5th Baronet, of Surrenden-Dering, Kent, and was born in the larte 1730s or 1740s. For a time he lived in Lillput Hall, near the bottom of today's Lilliput Lane between Black Pill and West Cross. The hall was decribed as a "whimsical residence", and Dering as being "well known in the fashionable world."
